10 minute payrise

The Handover: "Being 'good with money' starts with stopping the government from taking more than they’re legally allowed to".

The Ward Round: 10 Minute Payrise

So many healthcare professionals are giving the government a £500 interest-free loan every year without knowing it.

Stop doing it.

Every year you pay for professional registration fees (GMC / NMC / HCPC), your union (BMA / RCN), your indemnity (MDU / MPS), or even washing your scrubs (at least I hope you wash them).

Because these costs are required for your job, they’re tax-deductible.

Here’s what that means...

Ideally, these costs should come out of your salary before tax - like pension contributions. But in reality, you usually pay them from your bank account after you’ve already been taxed.

That means HMRC has taken tax on money that was never meant to be taxed in the first place.

So they owe it back to you. If you don’t claim it, you’re just letting them keep it.

(Medical students - this matters for you too. Knowing this early stops you missing out later and keeps you on top of things).

What to do:

  1. Add up your eligible fees from the current tax year and the previous 4 years (yes, you can backdate it).

  2. Submit the online form via the HMRC portal (link below).

  3. Wait for your tax code to be adjusted or a refund to land.

(If you already complete a Self Assessment, you’ll usually claim this through that instead - same outcome).

That’s it.

Why it’s worth ten minutes:

Depending on your grade and how long it’s been since you last claimed, people are usually owed £400 - £1,500.

Don’t work an extra shift to earn £200. Spend ten minutes and keep the money you already earned.

As promised, value in less time than it took you to log in to an NHS computer.

I’ve put together a free two-page cheat sheet with:

  • everything you can claim for

  • the full approved list of bodies and subscriptions

  • the laundry allowance

  • the direct portal link to claim it

Stop donating your salary,

Dev

PS - If you’ve already done this, forward it to the colleague who’s always complaining about being broke. They’ll owe you a coffee.
